I'm not really sure where I was going with this posting. But here it is, in its primordial state, I think all postings start out this way until they become so dense that they collapse upon themselves and form something else entirely. Something else which is exactly nothing like a universe.

The video must be Joel Trussell's commentary on all the rock bands coming from Scandinavia in recent times. Or is that old history dating back to 2001?

His video for Jason Forrest's track, "War Photographer" is lots of fun. Vikings, guitars, robots, cowbell, what else do you need?

I know there are essays out there about "Another Girl, Another Planet" being the greatest pop song ever. (Although my Google search hasn't come up with any, perhaps that theory's dead, and it's still the first sentence of this post.) People have professed their love for this song (scroll down, kid), regardless of the fact that it barely charted. And I will give them that, it's a great song. Catchier than the common cold in a kindergarten classroom.

When I first heard this song, I had no idea it was by The Only Ones. I had some compilation CD that contained a version by The Mighty Lemondrops. And although the Mighty Lemondrops never really caught my interest previously...well, Damn, if it wasn't the best song on the entire comp.

I've since heard a live cover by the Replacements that sounded like it was disintegrating and patched together with duct tape, but that added to the charm. And I can't find fault with the original.

I actually thought the song was built in such a way that no matter who covered it, it would remain intact and brilliant. A piece of perfect pop.

Enter Blink-182, or Blink182 or Blink 182 (spaces, hyphens, whatever. and is it Kid606 or Kid 606? My iTunes gets confused sometimes.)

Anyway the Blink boys come along and pour too much powdered sugar over the top and just ruin things. I could hear it in one listen. Maybe they should have had the nasally guy sing more. There's kids out there who have never heard the song and this is what they get, the NutraSweet version on a greatest hits compendium. Granted, Blink182 is a watered down Green Day, but I liked "Dammit". And Travis Whatshisname is a good drummer. They chose a good song to cover. And I'm not one of those crotchety folks that think every cover sucks, and that covering this song or that song is blasphemy. And if someone samples of mashes it with something else, so be it. I think if there was a demo version of this cover closer to the Dude Ranch/Cheshire Cat days, then maybe it would have sounded a bit better.

At least Limp Bizkit didn't cover it on their greatest hits collection.

I'm not sure I'm ready to jump into the fray in the world of mp3 blogs, but I heard about the recentdeath of Shonen Knife and DMBQ drummer Mana "China" Nishiura in a car accident, and was surprised to see no mention in any of the mp3 blogs over at The Hype Machine. (If there were any comments, no mp3s were posted.) "China" was currently touring with the band DMBQ. She apparently was a session and touring drummer that played with a number of other bands (Teem, Rashinban, Droop, Slower Traffic 5), in many styles.

I will not pretend to know a lot about her, and if you are interested in learning more about Mana "China" Nishiura, then I suggest visiting some of the links in this post.

The only CD I own by Shonen Knife is Let's Knife, but my favorite track is on the soundtrack to The Powerpuff Girls: Heroes & Villains movie. The Shonen Knife contribution is "Buttercup (I'm a Super Girl)", and The Ramones influence is way beyond obvious. But that's okay. The song is a lot of fun.

I couldn't find this with Google today, then I realized I had the link in an e-mail from the folks at what was formerly boomselection.info. That site is now defunct (or at least orphaned), but has been replaced with boomparty.net. Think less mp3s, more party promotion. Good luck, folks. Now where am I gonna go for my fill of M.I.A. mixes and mashes.

Time better spent blogging has been more often spent at The Hype Machine. It's an mp3 blog aggregator/archive. If this were the eighties, there would be some type of metal band named AGGREGATOR with a record album cover that would look heavy as fuck, with some skulls thrown around for good measure. And some type of evil ass font that would just cry out to be on the back of your denim jacket. Fuck yeah.

As if the posts were going to stop forever. Here's a quick one. Then I'm gone again, and probably won't post until this weekend.

DangerDoom - Yep, MF Doom and Dangermouse, and the record's apparently inspired by Adult Swim. Perhaps there will be an MC Chris guest spot. It seems only right.

All blog sites must praise this band or risk the scorn of Pitchfork reviewers. They sound a little like somobody else, and a lot like another band, too, but who cares, since everybody sounds like somebody else. I think folks who liked Pavement will like them.

I think the name goes beyond the ridiculousness of emo band names. Perhaps they will usher in an era of even worse band names until bands start using combinations of unpronouncible symbols, hand gestures, and morse code to develop names.

There are a few tunes to download on their site. If you've heard of them from me first, then you don't get out much. Scratch that. You get out often. You must be in front of a computer less than me. Good for you then.

I've been recommending Bloc Party people lately. Not that I expect anybody to get airplay anymore, but still I think K-Rock in New York could throw a crumb to these guys and play "Banquet". I sent my buddy Zimm over to the .com and .net namesakes for mp3s, since there's definitely a good primer available between the two. I also recommended my them to my friend Wayne also.

In passing I mentioned them as what Coldplay or U2 would sound like if they were really good, or something like that. But when I listen to Silent Alarm I don't think they sound like either band. So really I guess if someone liked either of those bands, and there are at least a handful, they would like Bloc Party. Well, only if they past the fact that the only way the songs will be drilled into their skull is if they play them over and over and over for themselves. There are also a lot of Gang of Four mentions in review of Bloc Party, I see where they come from, but I only just picked up Entertainment recently. So basically I'm just namedropping. In summary, whether you love or hate U2 or Coldplay, you'll like Bloc Party, or you won't, but you probably will. My taste is not your taste. I'm kind of jumping back and forth in this post right now. I kind of signed off like 5 minutes but skipped back up here to type some more.

I'm sleepy now and sleep is a rare commodity in my house right now (an infant will do that to you), so I'll make my links and be back next month, if not later today.

The White Stripes always seem to distract me now and again. It must be the color palette, or Meg's...ummm...drumming. Who knows?

The Blue Orchid video has a quite sinister feel to it, provided by Floria Sigismondi in conjunction with a burnt up old mansion, Jack's mustache, a girl with painful shoes, albino snakes, and ummm...Meg drumming on dishes with a hammer. The will not take over your entire conscious, subconscious, id, ego, and superego, like "Seven Nation Army" did. But it least it won't have your co-workers throwing stuff at you for sitting at your desk going, "Dum...Dum Dum Dum Dum Dum...Dum" incessantly. You'll just be making that swishy guitar sound with your mouth, but not nearly as often.

I actually wrote a review of Elephant that a never posted anywhere, not that anybody needs to read it, since they already have the CD by now. But perhaps it will appear. But then again, it looks better as a piece of paper lying beneath a bunch of credit card applications, receipts, post-its, random pieces of envelopes with unnamed phone numbers, magazines, crapalogs, and outdated coupons. Aesthetics are important, you know.

This is probably old. But so am I. Sort of. Well...you know. It's relative. Whatever.

It's all about the juxtaposition.
